Back to Semainville

One of the oldest Calvados in their range. The Rarete cuvée was a remarkable spirit, one of the finest apple-based things I’ve ever tasted. Needless to say, expectations are high for this Prestige cuvee, a venerable 50yo+ blend. Let’s go!

Colour: Mahogany with orange lights. Irregular heavy tears.

Nose: Impressive freshness at first, very minty. Candied citrus notes mingle with delicate floral shades of rosewater and lychee, a serious reminder of Lemorton 1926. Tinned pear and gingerbread follow. Beautiful rancio on overripe raspberry and banana bread. The oak influence remains perfectly reasonable and well-handled.

Palate: Ample texture, with a light bitterness in the aftertaste. Oxidative rancio reminiscent of certain Jura Savagnin wines, with their nutty and yeasty profile. Fine balsamic tones, complemented by fresh spices, cardamom and clove, and a touch of camphor in the background. Only a bit more depth and strength could have pushed it to another level.

Last Notes: Becomes more yeasty with air. Fruity nuances of vine peach and plum eau-de-vie emerge, together with clear craft cider notes and a faint brett-like edge. Breakfast tones of toasted bread and almond paste. Red fruit infusion in the background. On the palate again, it rounds out softly, finishing on rooibos and Tatin pie aromas.

Rustic, ample, and fragile at the same time. It lacks the charm and extra dimension of the Rareté cuvée, but remains a beautiful and honest expression of apple, elegant, slightly oxidative, and still vivid and fresh for a 50yo+ Pays d’Auge spirit.

My very subjective note: 89/100
