MALTERNATIVE BELGIUM #1 LE GERS MAJEUR POMES-PEBERE 1976 49,6%
Bold kind of Tenareze
Selected by Malternative Belgium, this armagnac comes from Domaine Pomes-Peberere, located in the Gers region (Tenareze appellation). The 49.6% bottling is drawn from a single cask (#115), bottled in July 2025, and limited to 120 bottles.
Colour: Mahogany with orange lights. Irregular heavy tears.
Nose: Strong French Indies rum accents with ample earthy notes. Heavy roasted tones, mainly on dark chocolate and charcoal. Delicious cherry sweet and marasquin shades in the background. A touch of rusticity and faint varnished wood.
Palate: Vivid attack with candied fruit: fresh plums, pear eau-de-vie. Various spice notes, mostly black pepper and nutmeg. Strong tannins, yet well counterbalanced by the lively fruitiness.
Last Notes: Beautiful umami shades with air, especially on miso broth and soy sauce. Intense coffee notes, like diving into a bowl of ristretto. Nice sherry-like rancio (nutty notes, oxidation). Back on the palate: raisins and green banana. Finishes on clove and tarragon.
A bold 70s-style armagnac with character and depth. The tannic structure is a bit too present for my personal taste, but the aromatic profile remains compelling.
My very subjective note: 84+/100
