Grand Terroir

I’ve been wanting to review this 2024 release for a while. 50yo, cask strength, 571 bottles limited edition. Let’s go!

Colour: Dark amber with orange lights. Irregular heavy tears.

Nose: Full of chalky shades and warm spice at first. Plenty of candied citrus. Vivid hesperidic tones on tangerine jam and mandarin, with gentle nutty notes (hazelnut cream). Delicate vanilla. Slight aniseed touch in the background.

Palate: High-acidity profile. Apricot jam and yuzu. Very elegant texture, signature of a grand terroir. With this level of freshness/roundness for a 70s GC, Bonneuil or Angeac come to mind, but that’s a wild guess, so let’s forget that. Finishes on Sichuan pepper, cardamom and subtle waxy shades.

Last Notes: Floral profile on orange blossom. A very few rancioted notes, but it remains fresh and floral. More waxy with air. Back on the palate: lemon zest cake (Pierre Hermé style) followed by pistachio and faint Savagnin-like notes.

Insolently fresh for a 50yo cognac, hence the intuition of a great terroir. Two minor reservations: the alcohol could be a bit better integrated, and it feels like it could easily age for two or three more decades.

My very subjective note: 88+/100
