Bache Gabrielsen La Coupe 120th Anniversary 40,6%

Birthday blend

Released to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Bache-Gabrielsen, La Coupe is a limited-edition blend assembled from selected Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie, including some very old components preserved by the house (from 15yo to 100yo+ (!)). Bottled at 40.6%, this GC blend can’t be more promising. Let’s go!

Colour: Amber with golden lights. Medium irregular tears.

Nose: Full of candied orchard fruit at first, enhanced by subtle honeyed tones. Gentle floral shades on rosewater and jasmine. Nutty notes on marzipan and hazelnut. Tinned pear in the background. Bright profile with hints of bergamot tea.

Palate: Very smooth attack, with a fresh mix of spices, mainly on white pepper and cardamom. Raw orchard fruit echoing the nose, with a hint of cider-apple bitterness in the aftertaste. Light waxy undertones. Evolutive palate, though lacking a bit of depth.

Last Notes: Discreet rancio with air, with potpourri and light tobacco notes. Lingering freshness on tinned pear again. Classic vivid fruitiness of a “young” (25/30 yo) Grande Champagne. Back on the palate: subtle yeasty/pastry notes: fresh-baked bread, roasted sesame. Finishes on licorice sweets and raw ginger.

A relevant and well-balanced GC blend, nicely merging younger and older eaux-de-vie. I only miss some depth to push it higher.

My very subjective note: 88/100
