FITTE ET LATERRADE DOMAINE DE MOUNISSON 1983 42%
Vintage Tenareze
Located in Castelnau-d’Auzan within the Tenareze appellation, the Domaine de Mounisson owns vineyards known for their old-folle blanche plantings. This 1983 vintage (42%) has been bottled for Fitte et Laterrade in 2018 (35yo). Let’s go!
Colour: Dark amber with orange lights. Heavy, irregular tears.
Nose: Beautifully exotic at first. Very rum-like, reminiscent of a 20yo Fiji rum, with its particular blend of fruitiness and oaky warmth. Delicate earthy citrus tones emerge, on yuzu and light spice. Deep toasted shades of dark chocolate round out the nose.
Palate: Opulent fruitiness, with a touch of acidity in the aftertaste. Thick texture. Well-integrated tannins. Liquid orange zest and oxidative nuances in the background, almost like a very old Bordeaux: still structured, but showing softened tannins and gentle oxidative development.
Last Notes: The earthy character remains. Dry walnut, a touch of old French Indies rum, and a faint fruitiness on fresh prunes. On the palate again, traces of exotic fruit return (guava, mango), before giving way to more pronounced oak in the aftertaste.
An atypical style of armagnac, displaying both fruit and structure. Fascinating for its rum-like personality and tertiary evolution, though perhaps a touch too firm and oaky for my personal taste.
My very subjective note: 86+/100
