Extra-old VSOP

Let’s head to Segonzac for this first cognac review of the year. Well, VSOP isn’t the most common age statement around here, but this one is clearly not a standard VSOP. We’re talking about a 10/15yo, so definitely not a strict 4yo as the designation would suggest. 43%. Let’s go!

Colour: Amber, gold lights. Medium irregular tears.

Nose: Candied fruit notes at first, mainly cherry and quince. A touch of orchard fruit in the background, mostly tinned pear. Easy and round profile, with a light tension already perceptible on the nose.

Palate: Oily texture, immediately delivering a nice concentration of orchard notes. Zesty edges, lifted by gentle spiced shades of anise and a few vegetal notes reminiscent of gentian. Very pleasant freshness in the aftertaste. Classic GC sharpness indeed.

Last Notes: More obvious aniseed notes with air. Delicate floral shades, recalling their Folle Blanche expressions, mainly lavender and potpourri. A touch of vanilla and tobacco on the palate, but it remains vivid and fresh, still focused on orchard fruit and fresh spices (cardamom, anise).

A well-built “young” Grande Champagne, clearly translating its terroir through freshness and precision (a clear reminder of a recent review). Something around 86 feels right, and 86 is already a very solid score for a VSOP (even for a cheat-code 10/15yo GC like this one). Best OB VSOP? Serious contender for sure.

My very subjective note: 86/100
