MALTERNATIVE BELGIUM #LE BALADEUR VOYER LOT 79 GC 50,4%
Verrieres shades
Another GC, another Verrieres. It’s the third one from the 70s here, and I’ve got a very good souvenir of La Fete (L71). So let’s try this 1979 selected by Pieter!
Colour: Amber with orange lights. Irregular medium tears.
Nose: Beautiful perfume, blending strawberry compote and sherry liqueur notes. Strong rancioted shades follow, with exotic fruit: overripe banana, mango stew and pastry tones of prune cake and gingerbread. A round, expressive profile, yet delivered with precision.
Palate: Perfect acidulous entrance, bursting with blackcurrant juice. It’s screaming Grande Champagne. Chalky backbone balanced by lively acidity. Extreme fruitiness, evolving rancio from humid cellar impressions to empyreumatic notes: ristretto, nutmeg powder, black pepper.
Last Notes: Leathery rancio with air. Hesperidic freshness. Breakfast aromas appear: ristretto again, orange marmalade, red fruits muesli. High acetate lift carrying acidulous red berries. It ends on strawberry syrup and a hint of cooked tarragon.
A fruity rancio bomb with an assertive acidity profile. Classic Verrières. Classic Voyer. From a personal point of view, I lean toward the wildness of the 1993 or the refined elegance of the 1971, but this remains a brilliant Grande Champagne expression.
My very subjective note: 90+/100
