Unusual kind of “young” GC

Rock and Cognac

First tasting note from this estate located in Angeac, at the heart of Grande Champagne. With an environmental focus and one of their small pot stills still heated over wood fire, they are well equipped to highlight this privileged terroir. This 2.1 cuvée, an XO (15 years+, blend of various vintages), was bottled around 2021–2022; the estate is now releasing the 5.x series. Let’s go!

Colour: Gold with green lights. Irregular medium tears.

Nose: Classic, round Grande Champagne style. Fresh plum and raisins at first, followed by light citrus hints and a touch of honey. Ample young fruitiness, though lacking some precision and depth.

Palate: Slightly oily texture. A faintly disturbing acidity appears in the aftertaste. Bitter fruit tones of young pear and tinned plum. Shy spice notes on Sichuan pepper. The lack of precision and depth sensed on the nose is confirmed here.

Last Notes: Light malty shades, young pear again, and subtle humid cellar tones. The fruitiness remains timid, carried by a rather thin texture.

A cognac that clearly carries a noble DNA, with good material in the background, but it lacks depth, definition, and strength. One can’t help but wonder what it might reveal unblended.

My very subjective note: 80+/100
