MALTERNATIVE BELGIUM #43 LE ROSSIGNOL DELAMAIN PC LOT 62 54,4%

Hidden PC

Well, that one is exceptional for many reasons. First Delamain bottled by an IB, which is something huge from a cognac POV. One of the very few Petite Champagne from their cellars, as most of their cognacs are GC. First Delamain over 50%. Well, congrats Pieter! 1962. PC. Archiac (like this one). That sounds very promising…

Colour: Dark amber with red lights. Irregular heavy tears.

Nose: Opens on generous tropical fruit notes, pineapple, mango, tinned peach, quickly followed by nutty aromas, especially hazelnut cream. Subtle dry floral shades of jasmine. You can feel the firmness and tension typical of Champagne terroirs beneath the surface.

Palate: Beautiful mouthfeel, thick texture with striking acidulous tones of cola sweets and apricot juice. Less fruit-driven than a Lot 62 from Jurignac (La Corbeille de Fruits), more wood-forward, but balanced by fine spice notes on saffron and white pepper. Subtle umami depth in the background, a hint of miso broth, lifted by vivid fresh notes of licorice stick and menthol.

Last Notes: With air, the tropical profile returns—passion fruit and banana—along with a delicate rancio blending floral (rosewater), earthy, and overripe fruit tones, reminding me a bit of some 20yo French Indies rums. The finish brings cherry sweets and blackcurrant juice, showing Petite Champagne at its finest. Excellent length.

Initially a bit restrained and tight on the nose, but patience (and even a drop of water) rewards you with a layered, expressive, and perfectly structured palate. A superb cognac. And quite a unique one, as I said before.

My very subjective note: 91+/100
