JULES ROBIN EXTRA GRANDE CHAMPAGNE SELECTION FOR MESSIEURS TROIGROS 46%

Three-star finesse?

An 80s bottling from Jules Robin made for Pierre and Jean Troisgros, the famous three-Michelin-star chefs of Roanne. Several selections were produced for their restaurant, and some have since gained a fine reputation. This one comes from Grande Champagne, bottled at 46%. Let’s go!

Colour: Mahogany, orange shades. Irregular medium tears.

Nose: Heavy rancio straight away, with strong oak tones and a touch of extra-old pineau rancio. Buttery pastry notes appear, followed by subtle citrus shades, something between Grand Marnier and old Tawny Port.

Palate: Thick texture. The oak is dominant, as the nose already suggested. Pleasant bitterness on gentian and orange zest. A touch of clove in the aftertaste. The structure feels slightly unbalanced, and one might suspect a bit of added sweetness or some other adjustment.

Last Notes: Heady orange blossom notes, chocolate, toffee and Christmas sweets. Hints of plum liqueur as well. The palate remains round and fruity, but precision and balance are lacking.

An interesting Grande Champagne, especially on the nose (around 89), with a classic, round, oak-driven profile typical of its time. Reminiscent of some old Jean Fillioux blends. Unfortunately, the palate feels overly sweet and less precise.

My very subjective note: 84+/100
