I’d never heard about this cognac house until a geek discussion two weeks ago. This small production brand is located in Echebrune, in Petite Champagne cru, but it’s only 3 kilometers away from the Fins Bois. Let’s see what can we get with this X.O.

Colour: Dark amber, orange lights. Medium irregular tears.

Nose: Full of citruses notes at first. Quite a sunny side for a P.C, something that is more likely to be found in a Bons Bois or a Bois Ordinaires. You get some sugary shades on melon and raisins. There are also some resinous scents in the background. Quite disturbing, but I remember that I also found similar sunny notes in other Petite Champagne cognacs.

Palate: Oily texture. Spices and sugar at first. Still some melon notes, but now carried by a strong oakiness on linseed oil and nutmeg. Average mouth length but you get a medium astringence. It ends with ample fruitiness on raisins and dry prunes.

Last Notes: A bit better with air. You find some nice flowery notes, especially on rosemary. But still a good amount of oak that is probably hiding a bit of this PC’s finesse, you find back these linseed oil scents. A little of citruses tones remain in the background. Back on the palate, you get a fruity and fresh entrance on mirabelle eau-de-vie. Maybe this Gyl Richard X.O was asking for some air. Wait. Finally, it remains flat. Fruitiness ends shortly and you only have some vague citruses aromas left. Round yes, but flat. Fruity but not complex. Oaky without any finesse.

You can perceive that there is a true potential with this X.O, but it remains an average one.
