GROSPERRIN PETITE CHAMPAGNE 1964 60,5% (Lot 136)
Courbiac Street Madness, S3 Ep345
When you think about Grosperrin and 64, of course you end with this famous Borderies in mind. But back in 2008, Grosperrin bottled and released a very small batch (200L) Petite Champagne from Chateauneuf terroir (eastern PC), probably sharing some kind of very chalky soil with GC. Add a spectacular ABV (60,5%) and you get a very intriguing recipe.
Colour: Dark amber, gold lights. Irregular heavy tears.
Nose: Fresh and herbal notes at first. Very tea-ish indeed. Sage, parsley, freshly cut basil. Fresh honeyed tones, on acacia honey. Heady floral notes then. Quite sharp and chalky. Hints of quince liquor scents. It seems to evolve very easily
Palate: Stratospheric palate. Oily texture. Earl grey notes melted to green tomato jam. WTF. Lingering tea-ish notes. Warm profile with nice spiced notes. Zan, licorice, Sichuan pepper. Infinite mouth length. And the strong ABV seems surprisingly at the right height. Perfect acidulous notes melted to a strong leathery kind of rancio.
Last Notes: Heady floral scents with air. Red berries jam. A tad of wormwood scents. Insolent freshness again. Hints of buttery notes, with biscuit and croissant shades. It remains very sharp. I hardly think there is a whole debate with this kind of cognac, because with its clean and sharp style, that’s not the easiest to understand. It ends on delicate bright fruity notes and perfect acidulous aromas. Endless mouth length again.
Absolute gem. Stunning nose, but the most interesting part for me was the palate. Incredible by its depth and its evolution through the tasting. Gorgeous PC.
My very subjective note: 92/100
