35/41. It seems that’s not the average G.C here. It is probably the oldest Grande Champagne to be reviewed on Hors d’Age (for the moment), and it has a promising ABV by the way. Well, let’s taste this the Grosperrin Grande Champagne 35/41!

Colour: Dark amber, gold lights. Regular heavy tears.

Nose: Full of woody and nutty notes at first. Nougatine, marzipan. Menthol wave. Leather cream. Precious wood shades. Sandalwood too. Gentle spicy scents on bourbon vanilla and ginger beer. Great licorice notes. Obvious medical and camphory notes. Very heady nose but it needs some air for sure. 

Palate: Oily texture. Dried fruits, mainly figs and plums at first. Exotic fruits concerto. Banana stew, mango juice, pineapple juice. Bang! Delicious licorice sweets aftertaste to underline these fruits shades. Tinned pineapple cake. Sweet dose of cinnamon brown sugar. Stunning mouth length. Opulent pastry/buttery aromas surrounded by candied fruits, mostly cherry, and peach. Still menthol notes in the background. Bakery notes on bread dough and sesame seeds. It ends on licorice again. Bang!

Last Notes: The nose isn’t the same at all with more air! Full of tropical fruits, mango, and banana symphony as previously perceived on the palate.  Still some yeasty notes, bread dough, and stout beer scents. A tad of fruits, mainly on cherry liquor (or something like marasquin). A bit of orange zest chocolate too. Persistent chocolate and tobacco scents. 

Back on the palate, you find this chocolate predominance, especially on cocoa milk and mint chocolate. Heavy cigar aromas underlined by black pepper and roasted seeds notes. It ends a bit like it begins: full of leathery and nutty notes. Rancioted notes are strong but remain elegant in this old G.C. Finally, you get a tad of latte macchiato and raisins aromas as a magnificent au-revoir.

The empty glass is full of potpourri, violet blossom, and cocoa powder. 

I was a bit afraid at the very beginning of this tasting session, but this G.C asks a bit of time to reveal itself. In fine, it’s undoubtedly one of my favorite cognacs among the hundred reviewed this year (for the moment).
