DANIEL BOUJU NAPOLEON 40% (2021 bottling)
Old school GC
That’s not the first Bouju here for sure, but it’s been a long time since my last review for this estate. So, sloping sides of Saint-Preuil, 15yo+, 40%. Let’s go!
Colour: Mahogany, red lights. Irregular medium tears.
Nose: Intense nutty notes. Maraschino. Raw chocolate aromas. Hints of sweetness. Very old-school kind of GC, with an oaky rancio and something quite structured for a “baby” GC (15yo+).
Palate: Slightly oily, but with strong oak bitterness in the aftertaste. Candied citrus aromas, mainly lime syrup. Hints of black pepper in the background. Shy fruity notes of red berry juice. Heavy tannins that stick to the palate.
Last Notes: With air, a bit of creamy sweetness appears, mainly vanilla pastry. A touch of dark liquorice too. Massive nutty notes of dry walnut and chocolate again. Back on the palate, you get strong coffee notes and raisins.
As you may have noticed before, I’m not a huge fan of this old-fashioned GC style and that kind of oak influence. Too bad, because I’m pretty convinced there’s a beautiful DNA behind this wooden shield.
My very subjective note: 83+/100
