AUTHENTIC SPIRITS SAUNIER LOT 75 44%
Chalky 70s GC
Selected by Authentic Spirits, this Lot 75 from Jean‑Claude Saunier is a single-cask expression from the heart of the Grande Champagne appellation (Segonzac terroir), made from 100 % Ugni Blanc and bottled at cask strength. Let’s go!
Colour: Dark amber with golden lights. Irregular heavy tears.
Nose: Fruit bomb at first. Slightly tea-ish, with shades of sage, parsley and freshly cut basil. Fresh honeyed tones (acacia honey), then heady floral notes. Quite sharp and chalky. Hints of quince liqueur. Evolves very easily in the glass.
Palate: Great palate with an oily texture. Classic chalky Grande Champagne signature. Zan, licorice, Sichuan pepper. Nice mouth length. Perfect acidulous notes merging with a strong leathery rancio.
Last Notes: Full of nutty shades with air. Red berries jam. A touch of wormwood. Subtle buttery notes, biscuit and croissant. The profile remains sharp and lifted. Finishes on bright fruity notes and precise acidulous aromas. Just like the Hors d’Âge cuvée, it could have ventured into a funkier territory.
Conclusion: A very cool 50yo Grande Champagne. Lovely palate and great tension, even if – as mentioned – it could have gone a bit wilder.
My very subjective note: 89+/100
