Straight Outta Chermignac

A cask strength P.C from Chermignac. 52%, not a common ABV for cognac, but this is not the only one from V.T with this kind of strength. Well, let’s taste this Vallein Tercinier Lot 70!

Colour: Old gold, orange lights. Irregular heavy tears.

Nose: On exotic fruits and salted/briny notes (something like green olive). Varnish wood. Leather cream. Reminds me a bit of some Demerara rums. Tinned pineapple. Extreme fruity scents with a bit of air. Opulent peach syrup scents at first. Wild P.C here. Umami notes melted to tannins and Rhone Valley red wine notes. Then you get verbena/honey infusion smells and quince marmalade too. Very quick and intense evolution with this Lot 70. It remains very fruity on blackberry jelly and nectarine juice, but you also get umami and woody notes. Salted soy sauce and linseed oil now. Shades of truffle notes too. Fresh heady notes in the background.

Palate: Oily/acidulous texture with very little acidity. Stunning blackberry/blackcurrant mix at first. Wow! Umami and medical notes in the aftertaste. Incredible freshness is enhanced by a huge exotic fruitiness.  Wonderful. Perfect ABV here. Rancid butter, peach yogurt, mango juice. A tad of mushrooms in there, in case you were searching for another shade in the aroma wheel. Incredible complexity and evolution, it needs to be said (again). Plums liquor and violet berlingot notes in the aftertaste, underlined by a sweet spiciness on cinnamon and vanilla stick. 

Last Notes: Flowery, herbal, and woody scents with more air. Potpourri, bay leaf, dry undergrowth. Delicate tobacco notes. A tad of nutty scents in the background, mainly on nougat and walnut oil. Hints of blackcurrant and lavender too. You also get some extra notes with acacia honey, truffle oil, and white melon. Back on the palate, still this generous acidulous texture. 

This P.C Lot 70 has some Jurignac style features but with way more freshness, especially on the palate. Tannins play an important role here, as they bring an exuberant but very drinkable wood influence in this funky 50yo P.C. Distinct herbal (sage and bay leaf) and camphory notes in the mouth length, but you still get fruity shades, mainly on peach syrup and grenadine. Outrageously good. The empty glass is full of banana stew and raisins. Stop it!

Incredible P.C from Le Domaine des Forges. Perfectly balanced and full of various types of aromas. Does it worth more than 91? Sure! But could it be a 92? Well…
