Venerable Armagnac

Armagnac isn’t the easiest spirit to understand. Truly not the same langage as cognac. Most of the time, it tends to be darker, more on the oaky side. And as a cognac lover, I’ve to admit that it’s really hard to find armagnacs that are able to reach 90 or more (from my very subjective point of view). So first Laterrade and first Poh Spirits here. 50yo. 49,1%. Let’s go!

Colour: Dark amber, orange lights. Irregular heavy tears. 

Nose: Wow! What a nose! Is this armagnac? I mean, you get multiple scents, a non-sense mix of old calvados, 20yo-ish agricole rum and apricot jam. Heady floral shades too. It reminds me a bit of Capovilla peach eau-de-vie, with this utterly refined mix of floral and fruity notes.

Palate: Thick texture. Litchi stew. Ample overcooked fruity notes. Hints of pastry notes, on marzipan and roasted sesame seeds. Not very-armagnac like, as you don’t get the common oak influence for this kind of old armagnac. Orange liquor, very close to the one produced by Grosperrin (if you haven’t tried Orange d’Or yet: you should!).

Last Notes: Bright honeyed tones and heady floral noted again. Prunes cake scents, freshly out from the oven. A tad of leathery notes in the background. Very complex eau-de-vie indeed. It ends on white chocolate roasted almond aromas. 

Deep and rich kind of very old armagnac. Very good selection, I mean, it’s so hard to find 40/50yo armagnacs that are not eaten by wood. 

My very subjective note: 90/100
