Good Morning Belgium! #1 (Part III)

I already tasted an old cognac from Jean Fillioux and it was quite convincing. A 56yo G.C, 47%. Another unusual treasure found by Pieter? Let’s try this Malternative Belgium Avec Allure! 

Colour: Dark amber, gold lights. Regular heavy tears 

Nose: Ample nose that needs some air for sure. (Few Demerara rum scents escaped from the sample when I opened it, let’s see if I find this particular DNA back later). Wild animal rancio at first, on rancid butter. Definitely some Demerara scents in this nose, especially with roasted pineapple notes. Spruce smells melted to hints of burnt caramel. Orange zest cake. Roasted and bitter notes mix. Musk notes too. Heady scents of leather and sandalwood. Great waves of banana liquor in the background. 

Palate: Oily texture with a tad of acidity. Very fruity at first. White melon, watermelon. Tinned peaches. Quite earthy and leathery mouth length. Ample wood influence here, mainly on fresh and astringent notes. Heavy licorice tones. Nutmeg powder aftertaste. 

Last Notes: More on red berries with more air. Nice blackberry/strawberry mix. Spice shades, especially on black pepper and nutmeg. Back on the palate, you find linseed oil and lime zest. Beautiful fruity aromas but a bit too much of wood influence for me here.  Nice aftertaste on eucalyptus and fresh licorice. 

Great G.C but a tad unbalanced in my humble opinion. The fruity part tends to be hidden by the cask influence, and it’s particularly obvious on the palate. But let’s be clear : that’s not a bad cognac at all. 

My very subjective note: 87/100
