GROSPERRIN PETITE CHAMPAGNE N°67 40,7%

Return of the Spice Cowboy

I’ve kind of an obsession with 60’s P.C. Don’t know why, but since the mouthwatering Lot 62, I’ve been unreasonably looking for this cognac profile. 1967, 40,7%, with at least 37yo of ageing. I think that we have a serious contender here.

Colour: Dark amber, gold lights. Regular medium tears.

Nose: Refined chalky notes at first. Very delicate nose. Melted poached pear notes and malted scents. Hints of acidulous strawberry smells. Fresh mushroomy notes on white truffle and humus. Shy funkinesss in the background, but I presume it asks to breathe a bit. Dry fruitiness on figs and raisins. Hints of humid wood scents too.

Palate: Acidulous oily texture, dry aftertaste. Immediate rancio on fresh red berries juice and atypical spiciness on Safran and caraway. Great mouth length regarding the ABV. Kirsch and heavy cherry aromas. Full of acacia honey tones in the aftertaste. Fresh vanilla and cinnamon too. Still this atypical herbal spiciness on thyme, white pepper and sage.

Last Notes: Heavily honeyed now. Hints of breakfast tea scents. Fresh clove and bay leave notes. Very herbal and spiced profile, not the one that I was expecting, but not unpleasant at all. A little of dry fruity notes on candied apricots and raisins again. Cherry liquor smells. Back on the palate, it’s full of caraway and nutmeg aromas. Oak’s influence is a bit more obvious here. It ends on fresh licorice and roasted black pepper notes (the one you taste with a great cacio e pepe).

Original and atypical profile. I kinda like it, even if I prefer extra-acidulous old P.C., particularly from this decade. Evolutive rancio, complexity, elegance. Without any doubt, it remains a nice eau-de-vie.

My very subjective note: 90/100
