GRAPE OF THE ART CHARRON 2004 51,3%

Back to Baco

This 19yo Bas-Armagnac is a 100% Baco grapes that has been aged in humid cellars. I’ve never reviewed Charron, but already tried a few during various events. They possess a unique style, using brand-new barrels throughout the aging process, providing a bold kind of armagnac.

Colour: Amber, red lights. Irregular heavy tears.

Nose: Heavy rancio at first, mainly dark chocolate and candied citrus. Ample oak influence, but it remains subtle and complex. Kind of rum-like nose, reminding me a bit of some kind of Foursquare (can’t agree more with Roger here: https://leblogaroger.eu/index.php/2025/01/30/grape-of-the-art-charron-2004/).

Palate: Dry texture. Coconut powder, cinnamon, and fresh hazelnuts. Obvious oak influence again. The ABV seems to be at the right height here. It ends on chocolate cake and Christmas tea notes. A bit dusty in the aftertaste.

Last Notes: Heady citrus notes with air. Cigar box scents. Heavy tannins. I only miss finesse, to be honest, because you get nice nutty aromas here. A bit disappointing not to find back these rum notes previously perceived.

As a cognac lover, I’m not a huge fan of this heavy tannins profile. But that’s very subjective. And it remains a good sip for those who love this kind of profile.

My very subjective note: 87/100
