FERRAND 32yo 60,5%
Conquest of Thyme
A limited-edition 32yo GC (235 bottles) with an uncommon ABV. In terms of terroir, most of Ferrand’s Grande Champagne vines are planted in Angeac. Let’s go!
Colour: Mahogany, old gold lights. Irregular heavy tears.
Nose: Quite heady at first (60,5%!!),as it feels like a dangerous mix between gasoline and high-esters rum (which could be very similar to some extent). You get shy raisins notes in the background. Think I’ll wait a bit and maybe add a few drops of water. Better with water. Nice amontillado shades, oxidized notes in general. Humid rancio scents: wet undergrowth, lichen…Warm spiced notes on safran and paprika. A few overripe tomato scents in the background.
Palate: Extra oily texture. Delicious rancio on mango juice and pineapple sorbet. Funky palate. Full of fresh herbal notes. The ABV remains a bit too high in my opinion. Better with water. Sharp at first, but great fruity and acidulous aftertaste then. Heavy cigar aromas.
Last Notes: A few herbal smoky notes, very mezcal-y. Great fresh thyme shades then. Tobacco notes again. Hints of heady citrus scents. Passion fruit, cherry sweets, and mango. A whole bunch of acidulous fruit notes at each sip.
A very nice dram for sure. Noble and funky rancio at the same time. But I’m wondering why 60,5%? I mean, I feel like it could have a better expression around 50%. But maybe not. Anyway, a rich and deep GC, but I miss precision here.
My very subjective note: 88/100
