Domaine d’Aurensan Carré des Fantômes 46%

4.1/5

DOMAINE D’AURENSAN CARRÉ DES FANTÔMES 46%

Who you gonna call? Ghostgrowers!

6 lost grape varieties (Meslier St François, Plant de Graisse, Mauzac blanc, Mauzac rosé, Clairette de Gascogne and Jurançon Blanc) of the armagnac AOC. Organic growing. From a single plot. 46%. Here is the Domaine d’Aurensan Carré des Fantômes (the Ghosts plot)!

Colour: Old gold, gold lights. Irregular heavy tears.

Nose: Quite floral at first. A bit on caramel but the yeasty scents dominate the nose. Bread dough, leaven. Some chocolate notes are arising. Caramel sweets. (reminds me a bit of some Waterford 1st Cuvee shades).Strong honey scents too. Very surprising.

Palate: Sweet texture with a little bitter aftertaste. Still massive caramel notes. Fresh ground coffee. Lemon juice. A bit fruity on apricot jam. Can’t say I like it but it isn’t unpleasant at all. Great nougat aromas. Licorice sweets. Honey sweets. Bread dough again with its yeasty notes.

Last Notes: Still a caramel fest. Some alcohol notes with more air. Old dusty wood scents. Here is the rustic side of this armagnac. Linseed oil. Walnut oil. Salted butter caramel. Coffee beans. Licorice sweets again. And the palate? A bit spicy, particularly on anise. Then it’s licorice, licorice, caramel, and caramel. This armagnac is almost unreadable. A great freshness in the aftertaste, mainly on menthol. It ends on fresh licorice.

It’s quite difficult to rate this one. Quite imprecise but many funky sides in this Domaine d’Aurensan Carré des Fantômes. In my humble opinion, it’s a smart experiment by the way and I sincerely hope they’ll release other original products like this ghostbuster.

My very subjective note: 83/100
